Bonding Process Task Group
November 4th, 2026 8:00 AM-9:00 AM PST
Agenda for 11/4 BPTG session:
The Bonding Process Task Group (BPTG) is convened in the M&P Working Group to build on Rev. H structural adhesive bonding process content in the handbook
This meeting will be used to discuss the following topics. Some of these topics are carried over from the Spring meeting, while others are from WG/TG meetings since.
General Business:
- Welcome & Introductions
- Review & approval of the minutes from Spring Meeting
Status Updates:
- Review drafted content for Cure Monitoring and Hear Survey Guidance (P24-091/P24-092)
- Review Amine Blush (P24-094) balloted content – discuss disposition of any feedback or comments received
- Review drafted content for Bond Surface Characterization Methods and Application (P24-095)
- Review of drafted content for Process Control Tools (P24-096/P24-097)
- The Damage Tolerance WG is working some interesting TP welding (or fusion?) issues, some of which seem to share concepts with secondary bonding, but others which appear more akin to laminating. M&P and BPTG have just joined this discussion and will continue to support their V3S12.8.10 efforts, but also hopefully create some more bonding M&P centric content with additional useful compare and contrast topics and examples to continue to develop the laminating versus bonding discussion, including preferred/acceptable laminate failure mode appearances when testing bond systems.
Looking Forward
- Need volunteers to support the continued efforts to enhance existing Rev. H content

PMC Material and Processes Working Group
November 5th, 2026 10:00 AM-11:00 AM PST
The M&P Working Group is directly responsible for content in Volume 3: Chapter 5 on Materials and Processes for Polymer Matrix Composites, Chapter 6 on Quality Control of Production, and Chapter 18 on Environmental Management.
The majority of this meeting will be used to discuss the following topics (in no particular order), determining which can be supported. Some of these topics are carried over from the Spring meeting, while others are from DRR notes since. Part of the process is to further define the topics and identify teams to work them. The first three topics were picked up or expanded during the 02 Oct ’26 meeting where TAI presented on use of multiple plies of film adhesive.
- Second sourcing composite materials - review dual source qual content, approaches?
- Shelf Life Out-Time - Additional content useful? SLOT extensions
- Exotherm remedies – review simulation and modeling section
- The Damage Tolerance WG is working some interesting TP welding (or fusion?) issues, some of which seem to share concepts with secondary bonding, but others which appear more akin to laminating. M&P and BPTG have just joined this discussion and will continue to support their V3S12.8.10 efforts, but also hopefully create some more bonding M&P centric content with additional useful compare and contrast topics and examples to continue to develop the laminating versus bonding discussion, including preferred/acceptable laminate failure mode appearances when testing bond systems.
- Chapter 6 QC needs to be compared with the other volume QC chapters, reconciling and consolidating best content, developing new needed content, and referencing best content in other QC chapters. Participate in SPC development efforts.
- As a part of the Statistics Equivalency TG revising V1Ch8, some more M&P specific guidance may need to move to V3Ch6 QC, perhaps some of it to V3Ch5 M&P, and some additional related guidance developed similar to what AM has done in V7Ch5. Discussions with Michael Hempowicz on specific content to be moved and developing additional supporting guidance. There may already be a proposed activity, just no identified authors yet (T24-044?).
- Some content may need to move from V6Ch4 Sandwich Fabrication to V3Ch5 M&P.
- Organization of V3Ch5 should be revisited given that section 5.9 is now half the chapter
- Lot Testing - Adding and/or setting aside coupons, other content?
- Specification Acceptance Values v Allowables – Need additional guidance?
- V3S5.8 - Cure & Consol Processes - is being looked at by Steve Christenson. Actions include separating (or otherwise adding more distinction between) thermoset (cure) and thermoplastic (consolidation) processes, removing the VARTM and RFI content from the RTM paragraphs and making them their own sub-sections, and adding a new sub-section for SQRTM.
- There have been some discussions with Lucas Marrone of Bombardier concerning CMH-17 guidance on mixing resins such as during cocure, leading to some follow up discussion on wet peel plies. No decision on revised or additional content yet.
- As a result of V6 discussions about widely distributed NDI content,
Teresa Vohsen performed a survey of existing NDI content in volumes 3 through 6. While it makes sense that NDI is covered in multiple places (e.g., M&P, Quality, and Repair), some gaps have been identified where we may want to expand content, and some contradictions in what types of NDI are covered, and how. There’s not a good section in any portion of Volume 3 on having specific procedures for visual inspection, establishing criteria for a valid visual inspection, or then documenting the effort (and responsible inspector). Tap testing needs to have coverage because it will come up; it's amazing what you can find with just tap, but horrifying what is so easy to miss. Tap testing is first in Chapter 13 and last in Chapter 14 but not mentioned at all in Chapter 6. Differences in NDI application for screening, versus investigation of anomalies identified in screening, should be expanded. As always, we may need to clarify some terminology.
- Lamia Salah (Toray) expressed some interest at the Denver meeting supporting thermoplastic content. While flagging chapter sections that allude to thermoplastics may be easy, it will be more difficult to identify areas that currently lack TP content, but really should (like perhaps current Tg guidance written for thermosets being poor if applied to some TPs).
New M&P Initiative Suggestions/Proposals for New Content?
The following related tasks are being led by the BPTG, with support from the M&P WG.
- Heat Surveys – Composites (coordinate with BPTG lead for content on bonding)
- Process Control/Traveler Coupons - Composites (coordinate with BPTG lead)
If there is time at the end:
- A section of M&P content from V3 Ch5 will be presented for review by the group for comments and suggestions
- Some recurring material procurement specification and associated material control issues (provenance, chain of evidence) will be presented

PMC P17 Task Group
November 5th, 2026 11:00 AM-12:00 PM PST
The P-17 Task Group focus is on supporting AMS material specifications for composite materials with data published in Volume 2, and then continued support/change management of these specifications. In comparison, the corresponding SAE P17 group has multiple additional responsibilities, including hundreds more similar, already existing composite and bonding AMS specifications which are not directly associated with CMH-17, most of which do not have publicly available data, QPLs, or change management QPGs.
The CMH P-17 TG is intended to also function within SAE P17 in the same manner as a task group, although that organizational approach does not formally exist within the SAE structure.
The associated SAE P17 QPG is responsible for surveying and monitoring the material manufacturers to their AMS material procurement specifications for the Volume 2 published materials. This includes ensuring that materials being manufactured to the above P-17 AMS specifications are comparable to those which produced the test data published in Volume 2. Continued, uninterrupted change management is then required to maintain this provenance.
Together this system allows procurement of the composite materials that produced the data published in Volume 2 using industry available specifications. This meeting will focus exclusively on CMH-17 P-17 TG activities, not the larger scope of SAE P17 activities.

- Will any CMH published adhesive and/or core data correspond directly with the current Volume 2 approach for composites (using SAE material specs)?
- How can issues similar to composites (procurement of the material directly represented by the data published in V2) best be handled for new materials?
- Additional suggestions/proposals for P-17 TG support of procurement of Volume 2 published materials using industry specifications?
P17 TG and QPG co-chair volunteers?
